The More You Know of the Day: And so, one of the greatest mysteries of our time is finally solved: Ice Cube’s “good day” took place on the 20th of January, 1992.

How did Murk Avenue’s Donovan Strain arrive at that particular date? Using details gleaned from the song’s lyrics, Strain was able to conclude the following:

The ONLY day where:
Yo MTV Raps was on air
It was a clear and smogless day
Beepers were commercially sold
Lakers beat the SuperSonics
and Ice Cube had no events to attend was…

          JANUARY 20 1992

So there you have it. Twenty years and one week ago today was what shall henceforth be known as the first annual National Good Day Day.

Legalize It of the Day: A 20-year, federally funded study conducted jointly by researchers at UCSF and UAB found that smoking marijuana once a week, or even once a day in some instances, did no long-term damage to the lungs.
The study, published today in the the Journal of the American Medical Association, tracked 5,000 individuals across 20 years, and compared their usage of marijuana and tobacco to their health stats.
Cigarette smokers saw a considerable loss in lung function over time, but participants who smokes marijuana as often as once a day for seven years saw no change.
Additionally, no harmful effects were recorded in individuals who smoked marijuana occasionally for longer.
According to the study’s authors, one possible explanation for the results may be THC — the active ingredient in marijuana. The compound is known to combat inflammation, and may be responsible for offsetting irritants that cause lung problems.
Dr. Stefan Kertesz, the study’s co-author, also posits that an unintended side-effect of marijuana usage is the strengthening lung tissue as a result of breathing deeply during inhalation.
And as if all that wasn’t enough, researchers found that pot smoking might actually improve lung function. “At levels of marijuana exposure commonly seen in Americans, occasional marijuana use was associated with increases in lung air flow rates and increases in lung capacity,” Kertesz said.
He did note that the increase was not enough to “make you feel better,” but, then again, if you’re smoking marijuana, chances are you’re already feeling pretty great.

Apropos Of The Previous Post of the Day: An 87-year-old man from Indiana was arrested in Michigan with 228 pounds of cocaine in his pick-up truck.
Leo Earl Sharp initially refused the officers’ request to search his vehicle, so a police dog was brought in to sniff around. Cops ultimately found 105 bricks of the white stuff, said to be valued at $2.9 million.
According to The Detroit News, during his court appearance, Sharp complained that he couldn’t hear the judge, having lost his hearing “in the war.”
Among other random outbursts, Sharp claimed he was forced to transport the cocaine “by gunpoint,” and said he has “never used a drug in my life.” He later apologized for the interruptions, saying “I’m sorry to be so troublesome, I don’t mean to be that way.”
He was charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and released on bond. Another hearing has been set for November 10th.

The Haunting Beauty of NGC 3190 —A Deadly Supernova Factory
—
This magnificent galaxy inspires us, again, to ask: does advanced life exist there? The fact that we have no proof of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe may simply mean that intelligent civilizations have all too finite lifetimes. NGC 3190 is a spiral galaxy of unbearable beauty in the constellation Leo. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784. In 2002, astronomers uncovered one supernova in March in the southeastern part and then another team uncovered a second supernova on the other side two months later -sure destroyers of vicinity-based life.
The spectacular image below is the “Trio in Leo.” There is actually a fourth member of this group which not shown- but the group also goes by another catalogued name of “Hickson 44.” These galaxies are estimated to be 60 million light years away. The galaxy furthest to the left is an elliptical galaxy (NGC 3193) and is fairly devoid of detail. The top center of the image features NGC 3190.
